Frequently asked questions
How do solar panels work?
Panels convert sunlight into electricity using photovoltaic (PV) cells. That energy powers your home first, and any extra typically goes back to the grid for credits.
Will solar work during a power outage?
Not by itself. For safety, most systems shut off during outages. You need a battery to keep power on when the grid goes down.
Do solar panels require maintenance?
Very little. Rain usually keeps them clean. Occasionally,
How long do solar panels last?
Most panels last 25–30+ years. They slowly lose efficiency over time but continue producing power.
What happens at night or on cloudy days?
You still get power from the grid. Solar doesn’t stop working but it just produces less. That’s where net metering or battery storage comes in.
What is net metering / netting?
It’s a system where your utility gives you credit for excess electricity your panels send to the grid. You use those credits when your system isn’t producing enough.
What does a solar battery do?
It stores excess energy your panels produce so you can use it at night, during outages, or when electricity is more expensive.
How long do solar batteries last?
Most last 10–15 years and come with warranties guaranteeing performance over time
How long will a battery power my home?
That depends on batter size and what you are running. A typical battery might power essential loads (fridge, lights, outlets) for 8–24 hours
Can I go completely off grid with a battery?
Technically yes, but it’s expensive and usually not practical for most homes. Most people stay connected to the grid for reliability
Are batteries worth it?
Batteries can be worth it to those who want backup power, live in outage proned areas or want more energy independence. They’re less about saving money and more about control and security
What if my roof needs to be replaced?
If your roof is older, it’s smart to replace it before installing solar. Removing and reinstalling panels later adds cost.
Will solar increase my home value?
Yes, homes with solar often sell faster and at a premium because buyers like lower utility costs.
What happens if I sell my home?
An owned system: transfers with the home and adds value. A solar loan is typically paid off or transferred. A lease.PPA can be transferred or paid off.
Will solar eliminate my electric bill?
This is the MOST asked question about Solar. The goal is to offset your utility bill by 100%. You will always be charged for your meter.
This topic goes hand in hand with net metering. Attend one of my Webinars to learn the facts.
